A smoke oil bottle (more accurately called a smoke oil tank or reservoir) is a container installed in a model aircraft (or other vehicle) that holds the special fluid used to generate smoke. It is part of a complete smoke system that injects this fluid into the hot exhaust path of the engine, where it instantly vaporizes into a dense, white smoke trail.
Its primary function is to safely store and supply smoke oil to the smoke pump.
The bottle itself is just one part of the system. Here’s how the entire system works together:
Tank/Bottle: The container that holds the smoke oil.
Material: Typically made from high-impact plastic (like polyethylene) or fiberglass. It must be resistant to the chemicals in the smoke oil.
Shape: Often tall and cylindrical or faceted to fit tightly inside an aircraft fuselage while maximizing volume.
Cap: Features a securely threaded cap with a gasket to prevent leaks from vibration and pressure changes.
Clunk Line & Weighted Pickup: Inside the tank, a flexible hose (the clunk line) is attached to the outlet. The end of this hose has a weighted filter (the "clunk") that:
Falls to the lowest part of the tank due to gravity.
Ensures it can pick up the last drops of oil, regardless of the aircraft's orientation (e.g., during inverted flight, loops, and rolls).
Has a filter to prevent debris from clogging the system.
Smoke Pump: An electric pump (usually programmed through the RC transmitter) that draws oil from the tank and pumps it at a controlled rate to the exhaust. It is the heart of the system.
Injection Line: The tubing that carries the oil from the pump to the injection nipple on the muffler or exhaust header.
Exhaust Muffler: The point of injection. The oil is sprayed into the extremely hot exhaust gases (400-700°F / 200-370°C), where it vaporizes instantly into smoke.
